Dutch architects MVRDV and Danish co-architects ADEPT have won a competition to design the skyscraper Rødovre in Copenhagen, Denmark. By creating a tower that is basically a grid structure with a minimum pixel size, any configuration can be imagined and filled in. The grid size of 7.8 x 7.8 m combines a network of good parking, a appropriate housing unit type and small office.

(Rødovre - Copenhagen, November 3, 2008) Rødovre Township, an independent municipality of Copenhagen, Denmark, announced MVRDV and co-architect ADEPT winner of design competition Rødovre skyscrapers. The tower height of 116 meters houses apartments, a hotel, shops and offices. A public park and a plaza are also part of private financing plan.
The new skyscraper with a total area of 21,688 m2 is in Roskildevej, a major artery East of downtown Copenhagen. It is after the MVRDV's second project in Copenhagen Frøsilos. The shape of the tower reflects historic skyscraper in Copenhagen, and now high-rise blending in the skyline of the city, and combines the two distinctive types of Rødovre, the family home and the skyscraper in a vertical village. Consideration of these local characteristics leads to Copenhagen's first contemporary high-rise.
In response to volatile market design is based on a flexible grid, allowing alteration of the program of re-designation of the units. These "pixels" are each 60m2 square and arranged around the central core of the building, that flexibility is composed of three core packages that allow independent access to different program segments.
In the low volume is slim to create space for the public plaza surrounding retail and restaurants, the bottom of the high altitude consists of offices, the central part leans north in order to create a variety of sky gardens that are terraced along the south side. This creates a stacked neighborhood, a village in the sky. From this south orientation the apartments are benefitting. The top of the building will be occupied by a hotel enjoying the view towards the center of Copenhagen. The constellation of the pixels allows flexibility in function, the building can be transformed by market forces, however at this time plans to include 970m2 retail, 15,800 m2 offices, 3,650 m2 housing and 2,000 m2 of hotel and a basement of 13,600 m2 containing parking and storage.
Flexibility for adaptation is one of the best sustainable characteristics of a building. Besides this the Sky Village will also integrate the latest technologies according to the progressive Danish environmental standards. The plan also includes a greywater circuit, using 40% recycled concrete in the foundation and a variety of energy producing devices on the façade.
A public park adjacent to the Sky Village is part of the project and will be refurbished with additional vegetation and the construction of a 'superbench', a winding road and a public bank. A playground, picnic area and exercise areas for elderly citizens are also part of the plan.
Lead architect MVRDV and co-architect ADEPT Architects won the competition from BIG, Behnisch and MAD. Winy Maas and Jacob van Rijs present the plan today in Copenhagen together with Anders Lonka and Martin Krogh Architects' local office Adept Dutch engineering firm ABT and Søren Jenssen act as consultants for the project. Earlier MVRDV realized Frøsilos Residence / Gemini at the port of Copenhagen: a residential project marking a new path in the remodeling of the old silo, which was highly acclaimed and received international awards.
