Spanish architectural YLAB architects have completed the Loft in Poble Nou, Barcelona. The project involves the interior renovation of an apartment of 100m2 with a terrace in an old building in the heart of a traditional neighborhood of Barcelona. The house has a plant very deep and narrow, and only two walls at the ends, one on the street and the other to the inner courtyard terrace.
The proposal is a comprehensive intervention of the architecture of space with two main objectives: to maximize the lighting and ventilation of the facade by removing unnecessary walls, and for a new distribution that contains all the necessary applications for his young master: one bedroom , a guest bathroom and a bedroom, a working studio, a kitchen and a dining room for parties and meetings.
In order to maximize the illumination is necessary to achieve a structural intervention that completely eliminates internal partitions and a structural wall located directly behind the rear façade, which is key for optimal use of light.
Furthermore, due to the difficult geometry of the house, all the different functions can only be accommodated through a flexible and unconventional distribution can be merged and separate spaces, and even change their function depending on the occasion. The new layout consists of a large airy and spacious common area, which runs continuously from façade to façade, and a private semi-closed box formed by the one-bedroom suite and guest bathroom.
The common area consists of the entrance hall, dining room, library, study and living room in the rear facade, and the kitchen in the front facade. All these areas are aligned along a longitudinal wall made of hand made of solid brick.
The bedroom is located between a high cabinet, with the dual function hall closet and the bedroom closet, and a large wood core containing the two bathrooms, which turns into a cabinet with shelves in the area study. This furniture is hiding two large wooden sliding doors that allow the independence of two distinct spaces: the bedroom, which is separated from the common area, and part of the room containing a sofa bed, allowing for occasional use as a guest room.
The wood core is a deep part of development and growth of the bathrooms. The transverse walls are resolved with translucent glass sliding doors to allow connection of lighting, ventilation, and the visual space. Inside all interior surfaces, including ceiling and floor are covered with light colored Bisazza mosaic and mirror. The devices and accessories are suspended or stand to contribute to the sense of transparency. The result is a game of glare and reflection that multiply the light and convert the bathroom into a bright and sophisticated, in contrast to the warm and sober the rest of the house.
