These are some incredible underground houses carved from natural rock formations in Kandovan, Iran.

They are also available for rent and even for purchase. From distance they might just seem like an ordinary mountain rocks, but if you look closely they actualy a 700 years old low energy house.

This extraordinary rocks building located at the foot of Mount Sahand in the northeast Iran. This rock houses chiseled from alluvial material volcanic rock. In the other word, this structured land is suitable to built the house or the other building on it.


Basically, the dwellings aren’t true underground homes since a portion of them sits above ground, but since much of the living space is buried, the occupant can expect cooler temperatures during the day without having the air conditioning.

These structure are around 700 years old. So, as expected from the style it not so primitive as you think. There are modern doors and windows mixed in with more ancient looking carved out rooms and openings.
