The museum that design by Kevin Roche forty years ago was become a landmark in California now. This museum has a modern, green, but also radical design.

It’s has a massive garden roof, extensive courtyards and low-slung concrete buildings that, for a casual observer, could appear like a long-abandoned industrial complex from afar.

And for now the renovation is on the running plan to make this museum more extraordinary.


This museum devided in 4 sections, it was traditional and contemporary art, natural history, and cultural history. But the visitor mostly named this sections as “the bunker” since there are many disjointed sections and the low profile design.

But now, with the renovation by Mark Cavagnero that use $62.2 million found, bring new life for this museum, now it feels much more daylight and opening up the maze like galleries. The renovation is already makes this museum can storage more than 2 million objects. The most obvious change is a new covered entrance and unified lobby.

The museum located just south of downtown Oakland, that separated from Lake Merit. The lake has long been a favorite place for pedestrians and joggers, and a new revitalization project will link the museum, adjacent community college and park system together to create a major urban green belt complete with new wetlands.

Although for the last couple of decades many cities have sought to build the boldest and baddest new museums, we should also look forward to polishing our older urban gems and renewing our urban vitality.
