Studio E Architects Designs Environmentally Responsive Living for UC Davis SAN DIEGO, CA.
Studio E Architects is proud to announce the grand opening of West Village at University of California, Davis. The official ribbon cutting of UC Davis West Village's $300 million first phase was held Saturday, October 15th. Now the largest planned Zero Net Energy development of its kind in the nation, West Village presents a fresh model for campus communities and sets the standard for environmentally responsible living and design.
The heart of the mixed-use neighborhood, designed by Studio E, comprises seven buildings that include; 123 units of student and staff housing, 42,500 square feet of ground level retail space and a large recreation center for residents, wrapped around a village green. UC Davis West Village embodies three design principles, integral to the Studio E philosophy: environmentally responsive design, place-making and community.
High efficiency sustainable design is achieved through an extensive solar panel system strategically placed on oversized, south-facing, saw-toothed roofs and energy efficient design features, which in turn reduce overall energy requirements. All buildings employ an exceptionally well- insulated envelope, extensive sun-shading through fixed and sliding screens, ventilated siding and large roof overhangs, as well as energy efficient lighting and appliances in every apartment. As a result, the community's entire energy needs are met with energy generated on-site.
As important to Studio E as sustainable design was the intention to make West Village a strong and vibrant community. Considered placement of buildings and the shaping of collective open spaces play a crucial role in defining this character. Extensive bike and pedestrian pathways create a network of open spaces; places that invite residents and visitors to relax, hang out and linger.
As the shops and restaurants come along in the near future, we anticipate that the village square will be an active and engaging centerpiece in the life of the community.

With the opening of the first phase at West Village, Studio E is now at work designing the next phase of student housing to the west of the Village Green. Like phase one, this next phase is designed to generate its own energy in a supportive and vibrant community.
